ActionResult is an abstract class. JsonResult is a subtype of ActionResult. ActionResult is used when you want to return a view or file or even jsondata or redirect etc to be handled by a browser. JsonResult is used when you want to return raw JSON data to be consumed by a client. ActionResult is a basetype for several subtypes like JsonResult ViewResult PartialViewResult RedirectResult ContentResult. For example : public ActionResult GetData( int id) { var data = .... // some data if (Request.AcceptTypes.Contains( json )) return Json(data); else return View(data); } JSONResult Serializes a given ViewData object into JSON format. ActionResult is a base class and JsonResult is child class. JsonResult inherits from ActionResult class. Using JsonResult we can send data in json format from controller to view Please check the image below:
