In .NET a reference type is a class interface delegate or array. Instances of these types (except interfaces which can't be instantiated) are often referred to as 'objects'. A variable of a reference type always contains a reference (or pointer) to where an object of that type (or an object which implements that type in the case of an interface) is stored on the managed heap. If the variable doesn't currently point to an object then it is given the special value of 'null'. All types in .NET (including all reference types) ultimately derive from the System.Object type which sits at the top of the inheritance hierarchy. System.Object is itself a reference type. The term 'object type' can either refer to System.Object or it is sometimes used as another name for reference type.
