hi 3-tier is a Architecture Style and MVC is a Design Pattern. A Basic rule in a three tier architecture is the client (Presentation) tier never communicates directly with the data tier. It means all communication must pass through the middle tier. Conceptually the three-tier architecture is linear where as MVC architecture is triangular.. i.e. view sends updates to the controller -> the controller updates the model -> view gets updated directly from the model hope this will help you.

Good question MVC is pattern of coding which you can implement at server side or front end technologies like JS. On the opposite 3-tier architecture is Server - MiddleWare (business logic) - Client it can be translated into architecutre as Database - IIS - Browser twitter @sumitjolly
