what is the purpose of creating virtual directory?

Sircan you please tell me what is the purpose of creating virtual directory. If i am developing a mobile phone application in asp.net/c# then i will install IIS & create virtual directory both or only Internet Information Service(IIS) is necessary for this.Please reply.

Virtual directory a directory that is created in the IIS to host a local application or target a certain physical folder available on the server or where the virtual directory is being created. For example: On your development machine if you want to host your application you will need to create a virtual directory and specify the physical path. You can create the virtual directory by right clicking the IIS and selecting from the context menu. For mobile phone applications it's not necesary that you need IIS.
