If you mean 'metacharacters' in the context of regular expressions in Java then if you want them to be treated as ordinary characters there are two things you can do: 1. You can precede them with a back-slash; or 2. You can enclose them within a \Q and \E pair. The following are treated as metacharacters within the Java implementation of regular expressions: ([{\^-=$!|]})?*+.
