From sun.com : Multiple inheritance--and all the problems it generates--was discarded from Java. The desirable features of multiple inheritance are provided by interfaces--conceptually similar to Objective C protocols. An interface is not a definition of a class. Rather, it's a definition of a set of methods that one or more classes will implement. An important issue of interfaces is that they declare only methods and constants. Variables may not be defined in interfaces. As Vulpes said, the diamond problem is the reason why Java do not support multiple inheritance. According to an old book I have on Java which was co-written by James Gosling, the inventor of Java, they wanted the language to be simple and to avoid the 'diamond inheritance' problem which plagues languages which support multiple inheritance such as C++. They therefore decided to go with a single class inheritance model but to allow a class to implement multiple interfaces. Anders Hejlsberg, the chief architect of Delphi and C#, evidently came to the same conclusion.
