why we are using entity framework in web projects

what is the main purpose of using entity framework in projects already used mysql database i.e worked properlly but why we have to change the .edmx please tell me

Entity Framework is an Object Relational Mapper (ORM). It is an additional layer between application and database that enables the developers to program against the conceptual application model instead of programming directly against the relational storage schema. So by this i mean that a developer cant be more object oriented now while querying data and it makes it easy for them to relate the thing with the real objects instead of the data tables.
