I started with winforms recently and I believe am doing pretty good learning the basics and started wondering whether my choice was really good when couple of moderators started asking me "Why winforms"
This may due to the entire world go behind Web. So the "moderators" may ask why you go behind "Desktop"? IMO, both have their own market and evolving.
Almost all my career I developed Windows forms based applications and appreciate if someone could suggest me a platform that is currently the best and yet helps me to develop desktop applications.
Since you are developing Desktop applications, as others said go with WPF. It's also have its own job market. All the very best.

We are discarding Oracle applications and going ahead with .net based 2-Tier application and as IT manager, I met half dozen solution providers (EPICOR, SAGE, SAP B1, FOCUS and few open source ERP solutions).
A very young consultant suggested me that our employees should use excel to fill up the order lines and then his application can easily download the lines into orders.
You are correct, a majority of the solutions are currently prioritizing WEB, because the applications could be accessed from anywhere, anytime, however there are situations where desktop applications become a must, like in our business scenario where users don't touch mouse at all and columns are navigated using the press of Enter key.
Thank you for answering my question in detail.

@Arun
Once someone asked ittoolbox, a place maximum Oracle things used to happen, to help with a SQL command to print 1,2,3..7
One decided to suggest what he felt the best as answer "Select "1,2,3,4,5,6,7" from dual"
How we perceive the situation is the first step to become a successful developer. Your coding skills comes secondary. I hope you will minimum try to understand what is behind this gyaan sharing :)
